Manchester community contacts and everyday services

Start with the right council, transport information and local organisation when you need practical help in Manchester or a neighbouring borough.

Check which borough serves your address

Manchester City Council handles local services for addresses within the City of Manchester, including council tax, waste and planning. Salford, Trafford and Bury have their own councils, even where a business uses Manchester in its postal address.

Greater Manchester Combined Authority works across the ten boroughs on regional matters. Before reporting a street issue or looking for household support, use your full address to identify the responsible council and the right service page.

Use libraries and local groups as starting points

Central Library in St Peter’s Square is a city-centre resource for reading, study, events and local information. Manchester’s visitor information desk is also based there, with its own opening hours. Other neighbourhood libraries provide services closer to home.

Clubs, charities, sports organisations and cultural venues have different membership and attendance arrangements. Check who runs an activity, whether you need to book and what access support is available before attending.

Plan everyday travel through the Bee Network

The Bee Network is the practical starting point for local bus and tram information. Its journey planning and disruption updates are more useful than a fixed timetable copied into a guide. Check the stop, direction and ticket arrangements for your specific journey.

City-centre free buses are a separate option for getting between central streets and transport hubs. Do not assume a free-bus route reaches an outlying neighbourhood or that rail and tram tickets are interchangeable.

Keep urgent help separate from directory enquiries

Call 999 for an immediate emergency. For urgent medical advice that is not a life-threatening emergency, use the official NHS 111 service. Routine appointments with opticians, vets or other practitioners should be arranged through the provider’s own contact details.

This directory cannot handle emergency reports or guarantee a professional’s availability. If a business detail is wrong, send a correction through our contact page, giving the listing name and the information that needs updating.
